My Meta tags and Robots

Have you submitted the site to the search engines?

BTW, it can take weeks or months to get listed.

Add a robots meta tag to the head section of every page you want indexed:
<meta NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="index,follow">

Then using notepad create a file named robots.txt that contains this:

User-agent: *

Place the robots.txt file in the root of your web ( where your home page lives ) and then "Publish"

Then be patient, it can take a few months to get "indexed."

If you go to the page you would notice there is a lot of
content on that page. Also I have submitted the webpage
to google. Should I be submitting to other places also?

M

Murray

Oops - you're right. But the problem is that there is no semantic markup
there (<h1,2,3, etc.>, alt and title attributes, etc.) to tell the search
engines what content is important.

As I understand it, the meta tags are only fluff (if they are used at all).

M

Murray

Chris:

Yes - I like it alot. Interestingly, it's not linked from the main site,
though!

I am a bit lost with your reply. Could you please give me
some more details. My apologies for being so dense.

Mya,

There are 2 things that get your site listed:
#1- links going to your site. For the most part, the more
the better
#2-submit your site. Google, DMOZ.org, and Zeal.com are
good places to start. Zeal picked me in a matter of weeks,
and they feed MSN and others. Soon yahoo & google had me
in. DMOZ took over a year to get me listed. By that time
with incoming links I had a google page rank of 5

I found that out too. ;-) They should though since their front end web is
kind of "niche" stuff. At the very least they should put some google
adsense ads or something to make up for the obvious time they've invested
in it. They might even want to sell the script. I'd buy it to put on my
site just to impress clients!

my understanding is that google doesn't look at the meta keywords at all.
some of the others do, but the <title> tag seems to be the "biggie".

Actually, I would qualify this to say "links going to your site from pages
that are highly ranked". Search engines don't like 'webrings' and can
penalize you for participating, as I understand it.

If you place the following meta tag between <head> and </head> on the pages it tells the robots to
index the page and follow the links.
<meta NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="index,follow">

The robots.txt file gives the robots permission to index your web site.

Open notepad, paste this: User-agent: * into the new notepad file. save it with the name robots.txt
and then place the file in the same location in your web that contains your home page.
Then publish your web.

Murray,

That is why I tried to qualify that. Google may reduce
your page rank if a link coming to you comes from a
'blacklisted site'.
