My machine refuses to share!

One of my machines running on XP pro and is the gateway
refuses to share files with the network. It can read and
manipulte files from other machines fine, and the internet
connection sharing runs without any noticeable problems.
Every other machine can share files with each other.

I've made sure that the NETbios is enabled, that I have
the "Mixed" node type, that the subnet is the same for all
machines and that I have disabled any firewalls.

This problem has been there since installation and is
driving me crazy.

What OSs are the other computers running? I wouldn't think that you'd need
to have NETBios running at all at least if your other OSs are at least
semi-modern. I certainly don't have it installed on my mixed W2K and WXP
network and I'm able to share files, resources, and WAN access without it.

I'm running a gamut of XP(pro and home), 98 and ME. 3 of
my pcs are on XP and two of them are sharing with each
other and the network just fine, but the gateway machine
just isn't sharing. I just turned on the netbios in the
hopes that it might help. But still no sharing here.

Hi John,

I am having similar problem. I am particularly interested in your
configuration case of W2K and WXP. I have one W2K Pro and one WXP
home. My problem is I can not see WXP from w2k, but I can see wxp from
w2k. Both machine can ping each other. Firewall is disabled on WXP.
MacAfee anti-virus has no firewall installed on wxp. On w2k norton
anti-virus installed. no firewall enabled. Both machine has identical
account created. Both machine has independent dial-up internet
connection, which works fine. Run ipconfig on w2k

Does the the difference of NodeType really matter?
I am just as crazy now. Your pointing is greatly appreciated. I was
told it was probably the wxp home to blame and am preparing to upgrade
to wxp pro. Is this really necessary? Thanks.

Another MS guy said that the problem lies with having
your node type be point-to-point or peer-to-peer, but
everything else is fine.

You need to tell us what you mean by "refuses to share files."

1. Check Event Viewer for errors.

2. Check the Services applet and make sure the Server service is started.

3. What happens if you go to another machine and run \\AMD-ATHLON\c$

4. If #3 doesn't work, what about \\<IPadressofXPmachine>\c$

David,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

I would try to change the node type as described there.
