my left arrow key gives me a "-", WHY????

i have a new laptop that i primarily use for excel and other databases
programs. Everyone once in a while i wil use Word but everytime i do, the
left arrow key inserts a "-" . All of the other 3 arrow keys work as they
should. I use that key to edit, back up change something but the way its set
up, i am continuously putting in "-"'s. I do not have this problem with any
other software programs. The left arrow key works as it should with all
software except word

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Normally, the left arrow key executes the command named "CharLeft". Try to
check whether the left arrow key has been assigned as a shortcut to something
else. To do this:

Select Tools > Customize and click the Keyboard button.
Click in the "Press new shortcut key" field, then press the left arrow key
("Left" will appear in the field) and note what is displayed below the field.

Normally, you should see "Currently assigned to: CharLeft" below the field
but you may find that your key has been assigned to something else. If that
is the case, you can set it back to "CharLeft": Below Categories, select "All
Commands". Below Commands, select "CharLeft". Click in the "Press new
shortcut key" field, then press the left arrow key. In order to make the
shortcut available to all documents, select Normal.dot in the Save changes in
list. Click Assign. Click Close.

To save the change to Normal.dot at once, press and hold the Shift key while
you select File > Save All. If a dialog box opens, asking whether to save
changes to Normal.dot, click Yes.
