Hi,

Is there any way by which i can use my portable usb seagate hdd as
sata laptop hdd (through some sort of convertors ),and install os on
it and use it to boot my laptop through it?

You need to buy a new 2.5" disk (any brand will do), then install
it in your laptop and re-install Windows.

What type laptop?
Is "boot external device" an option in BIOS ?

What exactly does the current drive NOT do ?
If software only problem, maybe fix it ?
Does it hang while booting ?
does it not spin ?
Can you remove it and put into a desktop system for 30 minutes ( using an
adapter?)
Can you format it ?

At least not on a usb or firewire connected drive. It will on a SATA
enclosure and drive if the computer has an eSATA port. I am running Windows
x86 and x64 that way on my test box.

OP has only a USB port... wondered if there was an adapter to convert
that to SATA

thanks to all for replying...

i purchased sata convertor to try and do what i asked...but without
any success...
maybe purchasing new hdd is the only soln...
the problem is that my notebook is still under warranty and HCL india
( the care takers for toshiba service) are saying that they would take
6 weeks to import a silly hdd from singapore as the laptop wasnt
purchased in india...so PATHETIC service HCL is giving...

If toshiba people can read this...HCL is just providing a disgusting
service in india...last time i had to replace my broken dvd writer,it
took >8WEEKS!! for it to get replaced... and that too only on my
yelling at them...they were saying that it hasnt imported yet...when i
shouted and yelled...they said please come at our site and we will
replace ur writer.

so i will have to purchase a newer one so i dont sit idle for 2
months.

and toshiba doesnt provide any official email to which such feedbak
can be reported to...

Really bad... :(

What else specification i have check to make sure the hdd gets
detected fine on my laptop?

Can anyone guide me is there will be any incompatibility for my newer

The Seagate has a 5-Degree higher Thermal operating spec. It uses the
newer perpendicular data orientation and has a larger on-board cache of
8-Megabytes.

The Seagate is also SATA 300 compliant and has NCQ ( Native Command
Queuing ) where your original drive was SATA-150.

Couple all that with the higher spindle speed and it should be noticeably
faster. My only concern is Toshiba notebooks can be very hot and do not
have adequate cooling for drives. If you get this drive you'll want to use a
real-time thermal monitoring tool such as SpeedFan 4.32 to keep an eye
on the temps inside the notebook.

Just match the SATA interface and the size. 2.5" laptop.
All else should work. But I like it when specs say its for such&such
laptops. It makes me feel better.
I have IDE drive in mine. That's not an option for you.

didnt pay any attention to it..
Yes my notebook was becoming really hot on 5400rpm itself and on 7200
rpm the story would be worse...
I would have to really check this factor...but would ,5 degree greater
operating temp really affect the circuitry...??maybe being faster,the
hdd would finish work much sooner and would rest idle for greater time
perion so in effect the temp could be lower than 5400???
according to you how severe this could affect the operation of my
notebook...i really want the faster edge of 7200rpm..any idea?

The 7200 Seagate will probably work, but it's the Toshiba design itself
that is the problem.

It's not so much the drive as how it's housed within the notebook. Newer
drives have perpendicular data orientation. Think of it as a block of data
sitting vertical instead of horizontally. ( So it takes up less physical
space ).
Newer drives have a larger cache, lowering disk accesses. Notebooks
generally have the drive housed in a mounting bracket that doesn't allow
for adequate air flow around it. The heat generally just concentrates and
doesn't have venting holes or a way to dissipate.

I've tested/worked on a number of brands of notebooks. Unfortunately,
Toshiba just seems to run hotter - almost too hot in my opinion. It's very
likely your original drive failed because it became too hot.

Maybe I missed it, but did you tell us yet, (in case only software crash)
, did you try to hook up your "bad drive" to your desktop Pc via
convertor/case,etc ? My reason for asking : my laptop crashed and would
not boot - couldnt even see the drive. I bought a USB case for my laptop
sata drive and hooked up to desktop Pc via USB. XP booted on the desktop
and ran a scandisk on the laptop drive and FIXED it. I put back into
laptop and worked fine.

convertor/case,etc ? My reason for asking : my laptop crashed and would
not boot - couldnt even see the drive. I bought a USB case for my laptop
sata drive and hooked up to desktop Pc via USB. XP booted on the desktop
and ran a scandisk on the laptop drive and FIXED it. I put back into
laptop and worked fine.

No my case is different the hdd platters have crashed internally,and
the drive makes click sounds as if the platers are hitting something
from the inside,i tried to use it on desktop and its not getting
detected...
the toshiba customer service therefore told to replace it but thats in
2 months period and i dont want to sit idle for that time.
