My laptop running Vista business cannot see my XP desktop

I have a desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 and a laptop running Vista
Business. The desktop is connected via ethernet to a Linksys 4 port
router/WAP and the laptop connects thru the wireless network. Everything was
working fine until yesterday when I discovered I could not print from the
laptop to the printer connected to the desktop (I was able to last week). I
now find that I can see the laptop from the desktop but I can't see the
desktop or printers from the laptop. I suspect an update to either Vista or
XP has caused this as I haven't made any configuration changes recently.

I have followed the Knowledge Base article that deals with this issue but it
has not resolved the problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

There is an odd issue with an IE update (yes, Internet Explorer), which has been
mentioned rarely in connection with Windows Networking issues.

If that doesn't help, I'd try to diagnose the problem with logs from "browstat
status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation",
from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!) (note how to use the Vista command
window):

Hi Chuck,

1. I am running browstat in a command window as an administrator. If I
simply type browstat it shows me the list of options but browstat status just
returns me to C:\>
2. How do I know if the nvidia firewall is running? I've looked in the
usuall places and can't find anything. I tried disabling power management as
suggested in one of the posts but it made no difference.
3. I've removed IVP6 from the stack.

Still no further with this. Anymore suggestions?

The nVidia firewall is being discussed in several forums. Here's my article,

If that fails to help, let's enumerate the symptoms. This would be a lot more
useful with 3 computers, but if you only have 2, we'll have to try it as is.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).


1. Open Notepad.
2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and
Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad.
3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar
in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
4. If the text is not easily read, then:
* Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things,
then continue with Step 5.
* Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.
* Return to Step 2.

5. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
8. Wait patiently.
9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks or your advice. A friend who has an identical laptop visited my on
the weekend ad he was able to connect to my desktop without any problem which
led me to believe that something had corrupted in my Vista OS. I restored
from an image I took a few months ago and I'm back to being able to see my
desktop shared folders and printers attached to it.

However, I have discovered 2 other issues that I'd like your thoughts on.

1. Vista network map now shows the desktop but can't place it on the map
even though the netowrk location is "Private"
2. When I try to turn off password protected sharing in the network and
sharing centre and chose Apply, it still shows password protected sharing as
on. I have disabled the blank password option in the security policy but
still can't turn it off.

Hi Chuck,

1. I am running browstat in a command window as an administrator. If I
simply type browstat it shows me the list of options but browstat status just
returns me to C:\>
2. How do I know if the nvidia firewall is running? I've looked in the
usuall places and can't find anything. I tried disabling power management as
suggested in one of the posts but it made no difference.
3. I've removed IVP6 from the stack.

Still no further with this. Anymore suggestions?

If that fails to help, let's enumerate the symptoms. This would be a lot more
useful with 3 computers, but if you only have 2, we'll have to try it as is.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).


1. Open Notepad.
2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and
Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad.
3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar
in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
4. If the text is not easily read, then:
* Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things,
then continue with Step 5.
* Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.

I have a desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 and a laptop running Vista

My solution turned out to be a temporary fix. The problem returned a day
later but I had to go on a business trip the next day so didn't get to do
anything until I got back yesterday. I've run cdiag on each of the machines

End diagnosis for ARISTOTLE

I hope this gives you some clues as to what's going on. Someone suggested
the problem was that the Desktop and the laptop are on different subnets and
Vista security blocks communications between different subnets. Is this the
case?

Hi Chuck,

1. I am running browstat in a command window as an administrator. If I
simply type browstat it shows me the list of options but browstat status just
returns me to C:\>
2. How do I know if the nvidia firewall is running? I've looked in the
usuall places and can't find anything. I tried disabling power management as
suggested in one of the posts but it made no difference.
3. I've removed IVP6 from the stack.

The nVidia firewall is being discussed in several forums. Here's my article,

If that fails to help, let's enumerate the symptoms. This would be a lot more
useful with 3 computers, but if you only have 2, we'll have to try it as is.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).


1. Open Notepad.
2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and
Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad.
3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar
in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
4. If the text is not easily read, then:
* Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things,
then continue with Step 5.
* Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.

My solution turned out to be a temporary fix. The problem returned a day
later but I had to go on a business trip the next day so didn't get to do
anything until I got back yesterday. I've run cdiag on each of the machines
and the results are shown below.

With Descartes having 192.168.200.101, and Aristotle 192.168.200.102, I don't
see a subnetting problem. I do see a couple concerns.

The nVidia nForce is a known problem, here.

When you ran browstat on Aristotle, were you running the command window as an
administrator?

Read the nVidia post, and remove IPV6. Then rerun CDiag on both computers, and
we'll see if there's any improvement.

I was able to run browstat logged in under the default admin account. I was
not able to as "Chris" with admin rights which seems strange.

Having mde the changes, I can how see Descartes from Aristotle but its still
not placed correctly on the network map. You may also notice a new device
NP3680 which is a print server I add to the network in an effort to overcome
my printing issues. Its attached to the router with the IP address
192.168.200.106. It's also not placed correctly on the network map and I
can't see the printer that's attached to it.

End diagnosis for ARISTOTLE

I was able to run browstat logged in under the default admin account. I was
not able to as "Chris" with admin rights which seems strange.

Having mde the changes, I can how see Descartes from Aristotle but its still
not placed correctly on the network map. You may also notice a new device
NP3680 which is a print server I add to the network in an effort to overcome
my printing issues. Its attached to the router with the IP address
192.168.200.106. It's also not placed correctly on the network map and I
can't see the printer that's attached to it.

Hi Chuck,

I unchecked IPv6. I've checked again and it is still unchecked. The
uninstall option is greyed out so I can't uninstall it. Any suggestions?

Run "ipconfig /all" on Aristotle again. Does it show things like "Link-local
IPv6 Address", "Tunnel adapter", and "6TO4 Adapter"?

If not, let's look at Aristotle again. The log from "browstat status" is
interesting.

An 1130, according to "net helpmsg", is a known problem.

Yeah, IPV6 is still there.

But start with the IRPStackSize issue. The instructions say to create then
test. Then add 3 to the value and test again. And repeat, until you don't see
the symptom (in your case, until the log from "browstat status" ceases to show
the "1130").

FYI, the 1130 is coming from Aristotle, and Aristotle has elected itself master
browser.

Descartes is now the master but its reporting a registry error. Browstat
result is:

That's getting better, Chris. Browstat, like some other diagnostic tools,
requires access to the master browser registry, which means administrative
access. A master browser running XP Home, XP Pro with Simple File Sharing, or
XP Pro with Advanced File Sharing and only Guest access, will produce this. Or
a misconfigured personal firewall.

What do you get from Descartes? Does it match (except the error 5)?

Chuck thanks again. Descartes was already using simple file sharing but the
guest account was turned off. I have turned it back on. Aristotle has
password protected sharig turned on. I've tried to turn it off but I can't.
When I click the radio button to turn off password protected sharing and
click apply, it still shows passowrd protected sharing as on.

Chris,

Disabling PPS in Vista requires an active Guest account for sharing. Is Guest
activated for network access, on Aristotle?
