My introduction

Arnie

Hi,
You may have noticed I am new with newsgroups.
Some people have already encountered me in that.
I apologise if I make anyone of you angry.
I'm interested in freeware also.
I hope I will be accepted here and not 'squeezed'.

Please, do not immediatly post a reply pointing to some newbie-FAQ.
I feel like they're the opposite of the goal of the GNU.
(If you really bother, http://www.linux.org/info/gnu.html, preamble
sentence 1-2)
Note especially: "the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee
your freedom to share free software"!

Now I used to be in the phpBB-circuit.
I was on lots of places on the nick SuperNova and webmaster of
snhideout.com.
I quit with all these things, including my nick.

On my site I wrote articles on computer issues, and my favourite freeware
programs.
I also had a project-section, for freeware programming projects.
Myself I'm not a great programmer.
My biggest thing is most likely "Batches", which was a collection of DOS
batches.
They could do kind of nice things, really, for batches.
Currently I use Profan² 3.1, a 16-bit programming language.
It's freeware from www.profan.de. The newer versions are shareware.

I have no idea if you tell things about yourself here.
On some phpBB forums one actually did, but I have a feeling not here.
That's fine with me, though.

It seems this place works a bit different than phpBB forums.
I mean how things work here (not how to use newsgroups).
So could someone briefly tell me:
-> how and why some posts are deleted
-> how strictly must threads be about freeware
-> how strictly should one use the message filters:
http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/posting.htm
-> what-not-to-do (well, except the quoting issue.. :D)
-> oh, and is it necessary to include the author when quoting..?

Thank you in advance!

Please, do not immediatly post a reply pointing to some
newbie-FAQ. I feel like they're the opposite of the goal of the
GNU.

The GNU project's goal is to develop a free software alternative to
UNIX® systems. The goal of FAQ pages is to answer questions such as
the ones you have asked.
(If you really bother, http://www.linux.org/info/gnu.html,
preamble sentence 1-2)
Note especially: "the GNU General Public License is intended to
guarantee your freedom to share free software"!

I'm having a hard time seeing what that has to do with why you don't
want people to point you to answers to your questions.

Not as a general rule.

That depends to a large extent on how popular or unpopular you want to
be. ;)
-> how strictly should one use the message filters:

Including the appropriate filter is appreciated.

Leaving the author's name out or attributing a quote to the wrong person
is a *very* good way to draw flames.

Glad you're here. Hope you discover some freeware you like.

Susan

Well, as someone new to newsgroups, especially to ACF, you haven't made
a great start I'd say. You interupted a thread on Open Office, which had
become an exchange of usual sorts between regulars, with some inane
pretence at being the school hall monitor:

"This thread is useless.
Let's make things clear: this place is to discuss freeware.
Comparing commercial products with their freeware alternative is OK.
Flaming is not OK. It's really not going to help you.
When you can't convict eachother of your opinion, just quit the
discussion.
It's not of any real use to you, it really is irritating.
I think that the one that makes the first step to peace (which in the
"fighter view" is seen as victory for the other) by free will deals
wisely."

While this kind of interjection *may* be appropriate from a ng moderator
(although a moderator would have had the experience and sense to express
it rather better), it's certainly inappropriate comment from a confessed
newbie, who knows neither the regulars involved, nor the the way in
which lots of useful discussions here end up presenting themselves.

Advice: Lurk longer, then post once you've worked it all out. There's a
long learning curve ahead before you get your preaching license.
Remember too, that this ng is not here for your specific benefit. You'll
see lots of things you don't like on the big, bad usenet. Learn to
ignore them.

A.. license??
If this place works like that, I don't even want to be here.

It's a figure of speech, and was intended to reflect the views of most
newsgroups on the usenet, not just here; namely, lurk a while to see how
things tend to be done. Coming in with guns a firing will probably not
win you much support, especially if nobody knows you.

No, no, come back! I lost my head for a second. It's this old war wound that
flares up from time-to-time. A bit of shrapnel close to the heart.

Read my post again (without blinking, this time). Include the sig.
}:O)

Having done that, the "S" miht be "screw". That's the best up with which I
can come. Well, that and "sodomize", but that seems a stretch for this.

Well, that would depend on the girth, wouldn't it? }:OD

I think you've got it. And I think what threw me was that DK for
doorknob is not strictly an initialism. I was working on something
with 'keyster' for a while, but the grammar would not work.
