My imported home movies won't play on powerpoint any ideas?

When I try to play the movies on slide show or on that page the program
freezes and closes itself or shows me a white square. Help please
 
You may want to read this tutorial on media in PowerPoint and see if it
helps you identify the problem. If not, be sure to holler back.
