My IE6 is slow

D

DEF

Compared to IE6 on my second slower processor machine IE6 runs slowly on my
main machine. Mozilla Firebird 1.5 runs quickly on both machines. What do I
need to check - I can tell something ain't right. Has my machine been hacked
at some point - and to what gain? I use a 2mb broadband service so that
ain't the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hi DEF :)

If you have recently updated to the Java 6.0, uninstall it in Add/Remove
Programs. There have been problems associated with the 6.0 update on some
machines that causes IE to open and/or respond very slowly. If it does not
revert back to the Java 1.5.0_05 then reinstall the _05. You can find the
_05 here:
http://www.tucows.com/get/194327_86883

That should return the system to normal speed. If not, post back here with
any details.

Hope this helps.

Hi DEF :)
Still no joy I'm afraid Jan.

Ok....that is a first thought, as it has been the cause of many similar
symptoms lately. So...let's take another approach.

Totally clear your TIF and History files. If they are too large, or their
respective hidden index.dat files are too large or damaged/corrupted, it can
take IE a long time to start as it reads through those files when first
starting:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Delete the Off-Line files as well

However, the index.dat file within the folder doesn't get cleared when
emptying the TIF via
IE. You must delete the TIF and History 'folders' to get rid of the
index.dat files, as per the above link, or.... you can use the free utility
CCleaner, which does a very good job:
http://www.ccleaner.com/

If the TIF is much larger than 50 MB, IE starts to slow down because it's
actually faster to get the information from the Internet than to find it in
TIF. In addition, you start losing the ability to save pictures as anything
but a BMP and you lose the ability to View | Source. Unfortunately, as far
as I know IE still by default grabs some percentage of the drive for TIF and
for large drives this is way too much. 50 MB seems to be about the best.

and...

Download and run the following:

BHODemon - Free

or…….

Try reregistering the following files:

Start>Run>enter the following lines in the window one at a time, hitting
Enter after each one. You should see a message after entering each one that
it was registered.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

also.......

Internet Explorer stops responding or the home page takes a long time to
open

You should also check for malware….

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Be aware, there are many types of scumware that your antivirus and some
removal tools cannot detect or remove. Therefore, use the programs as
described in the instructions here. Some variants can continue to replicate
themselves each time your computer starts up if not properly removed.

Hope this helps.
