my HP7955 pc will not go into hybernation

after pressing the hybernate front panel button the
system responds by saying that a com port is" preventing
the machine from entering hybernation."

What have you got hooked up to the com port? Typically this would be
a modem or some other serial device. If it's a modem (internal or
external) make sure you have the latest MS signed drivers. If not, go
to the modem makers web site and look for XP drivers that are MS
signed.
