I was working on an important memo. Near the end of the memo, I hit "print"
instead of save (I know, stupid rookie mistake). Word 2003 froze up and upon
hard reboot, I noted that none of my work had been saved. However, I do have
a "print" file that is in the same folder. It is the name of the file, but
the first letters have been replaced with "~$" (i.e. document saved as
testfile.doc is now ~$stfile.doc). When I try to open, it gives me many
options as to what binary/program to open with and use to convert. However,
none of them translate to a complete document and only give me weird symbols.
I assume this is the queue for the print job and it includes all changes I
made, so I'd really like to be able to use it. Does anyone know how to
convert this print file to a useable file that has all of my changes? I
thank you all in advance!

Sorry to say, you assume wrong. A file that starts with "~$" is an "owner
file", a form of temporary file (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632)
that describes who has the document open and makes any other user open it
read-only. It doesn't contain any part of the document, and has nothing to
do with the print job.

You might find some of the text by searching the disk for files with a .tmp
extension that contain some phrase you know was in the memo.

Whether or not you find some usable copy, read
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm to clean up and
prevent further problems.

Troubleshoot file recovery
Show All
Hide All
I turned on the AutoRecover feature before I lost my file, but I can't save
or open the recovered file.

This is from MS Word Help and I've used this successfully in the past.... it
might work if you have your autosave enabled.

"When you restart a Microsoft Office program after a power failure or
similar problem, the program automatically opens any recovered files. If for
some reason the recovery file didn't open, you can open it yourself.

In the folder list, locate and double-click the folder where recovered files
are stored.
The location is usually

C:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\word\

In the Files of type box, click All Files.
Each recovered file is named "AutoRecovery save of file name" and has the
program file name extension.

Click the name of the file you want to recover, and then click Open.
On the Standard toolbar, click Save .
In the File name box, enter the name of the existing file.
When you see a message asking whether or not you want to replace the
existing file, click Yes. "

Good luck!
