My excel sheet is slow to changes.

For simple files, it returns fast. But for a large file, cursor takes lot
longer to return. For example, after I drag the cursor to change the column
width, top width changes and the sheet width changes after some time, while I
wait for the cursor to return. Similarly, changing a cell's value and hitting
enter or tab also takes forever. Working on a SONY vaio laptop (VGN-S460)
Windows XP, centrino, 512 MB Ram, Office 2003.

This is all pretty much a hardware issue. Three pieces at issue here:
Processor type/speed (which you did not mention)
Amount of memory: 512MB - should be enough for most situations.
Video card - whatever was provided in the laptop, but laptops are not known
for having highspeed video cards in them.

You might try turning off automatic recalculation, but I doubt that it's
going to help much. The delay is probably in video updating.

P.S. Centrino technology is not a specific chip or anything - it is a
combination of a group of Intel chips used for mobile wireless networking.
The technologies include the Pentium M chip, the integrated 802.11b wireless
capability provided by the Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 Network Connection, and
the 855 chipset. They've updated this with the new Intel Core-Duo CPUs to
call it Core-Duo Centrino.

Processor is 1.73 GHz
Video card is nVidia GeForce Go 6200

I have turned the recalculation off and you are right it did not help. I
switched from Page Break Preview to Normal view. It did seem to help but then
not.

So, what should I do?
