"MY Documents" moved in Explorer Folder listing

B

Bill

IN Windows XP Pro when I start Explorer, in the Folder list,I used to find
"My Documents" following the
entry "My Computer" - Now I find "My Documents" after the last drive (E:) as
below:

CD_RW Drive (E:)
Control Panel
Shared Docments
Administ Documents
Joe's Documents
My Documents ( Why here?)

How do I get it back to the top of the page?

Apart from the "users's document folder" listing, there should be a "My Documents" entry at the top (not under My Computer tree). Can you post a screenshot?

Mine goes

This seems to undermine your presumption.

No, the SortOrderIndex value determines the order of My Computer/Documents
on Desktop and in My Computer's Folder List. You can set it with TweakUI >
Desktop > First Icon.

Good Luck, Ayush.

My feeling is still that your No should be a Yes. However, your
TweakUi suggestion is probably how I come not to have a My Documents
folder at the top of the Folder List.

Do you know where the SortOrderIndex values are recorded in the
Registry? I presume that is where they are?

yes, you are right.

In the ClSID of the Shell object. For My Documents, it is here :
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450d8fba-ad25-11d0-98a8-0800361b1103}] (Right side)

Thanks for coming back with the answer.

After I posted I did a little research of my own. On my own system I
found one for My Documents and the other for the Recycle Bin. None of
the others are mentioned?

Hi Gerry,

My folder hierarchy of the Folders pane when in C:\

I.e. Start | Run | Type: \ | Click OK.

Desktop
[+] My Documents
[-] My Computer
.....[+] 3½ Floppy (A:)
.....[-] Local Disk (C:)
.........[+] Documents and Settings
.........[+] Program Files
.........RECYCLER (Hidden folder)
.........System Volume Information (Hidden folder)
.........[+] WINDOWS
.....[+] CD Drive (D:)
.....[+] CD Drive (E:)
.....[+] Control Panel
[+] My Network Places
Recycle Bin

My setting...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}
Value Name: SortOrderIndex
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 48 hexadecimal (72 decimal)

By default Windows XP places the My Documents folder as the first icon on
the desktop.

TweakUI First Icon
This allows setting the first icon on the desktop to be either "My
Documents" or "My Computer". This is a per-system setting, available only if
the current user has permission to alter the "My Computer" settings. After
changing the setting, the user may need to select "Arrange By Name" from the
desktop context menu for the change to take effect. Some applications will
not respond to the new setting until you log off and back on.

Setting Name Type Data
HKCR\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}
My Documents SortOrderIndex REG_DWORD 0x48
My Computer SortOrderIndex REG_DWORD 0x54

{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} is the CLSID for the My Documents
folder.

Paste the following line into Start | Run, click OK and see what opens...

file:///::{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}

OE wants that line to be a link, ignore that.

And Bill's problem (OP) seems to be different. The "My Documents" is pushed at the end. I'm wondering if it's the actual file system name. The namespace one is always at the top.

Posting a screenshot would help.

Hi Gerry,

The order depends upon the SortOrderIndex registry value, which applies for shell objects.
