My document is sprinkled with some characters that look like a black square
with a hook on the bottom. They appear at each hard return. If I send this
document as an attachment and it is opened by someone else, they are no
longer on the doc. How do I get rid of these and how did they get there?

Your version of Word may look different.

Perhaps your formatting or other non-printing characters are turned on.

Your Standard toolbar (the one just below the menu bar) should have a button
that looks like a backwards P. If that's pushed in, click it to pop it out.

On the menu bar, check Tools > Options and look at the View tab. In the
Formatting Marks area (and other places on that tab) are check boxes you can
check or clear to show or hide various marks in your display.
