Okay, here's the deal;

My processor is running at 99% with no appications loaded. I try to run
anything and it's like it locked up. Takes about half an hour to load
Outlook Express.

I admit that I'm simultaneously running; Spybot, Windows Defender and Norton
Antivirus. They all say everythings fine.

Here's the kicker; I can open task manager, shut explorer down (that's the
app running the CPU at 99%), and operate the computer with just the task
manager. And it's lightning fast; run several apps, load whatever, works
fine. Just no windows explorer.

Is there something I'm missing here. (Oh yeah Dell Dim 2400; 2.65mHz
pentium (IV i think), .75G Ram, 80G hard drive (90% full) plus a 14G second
drive, CD-RW and a DVD-RO, and an HP 5510v all in one, all drivers loaded.

There's got to be something wrong, but I've done everything but re-install XP.

If anybody has any ideas, I'd love to hear 'em.

Thanks,

oh yeah, and I recently installed the "desktop search" application from the
microsoft downloads section . . . could that have caused this?

You bet cha! have you tried uninstalling it? if it's not the problem you can
always reinstall it again.
Also many viruses and or malware will use the name explorer.exe as a way to
hide themselfs. try an online scan.

Apart from other issues, you also need to clear some space on your hard
drive.. 10% free space is not enough.. you should be looking at between
20-25% free space..
