MY CPU SHUTS OFF BY ITSELF

I am tired of this happening and want to try to fix it. My CPU just shuts
off sometimes. It happens more when my son plays games on CD ROM or at
websites like nick.com. It seems like when it is doing anything more
involved than word processing or surfing the web it cuts out. I can't even
run a full system scan without it shutting off. What the heck?

Sounds like overheating or a faulty power supply.

Open the case and (gently) blow out all the dust and dirt (cough, cough). While the case is open, power on the computer and make sure all the cooling fans are working, including the one of the video card, if any.

Sometimes, just cleaning the shmutz inside does the trick. If the fans aren't working, get 'em replaced. If you still have the same problem, have the power supply checked or replaced. They aren't expensive.

Thanks for the reply. I will do what you suggested. I hope that it is this
simple. In the event that it is not the solution, are there any other
opinions about what I might be able to do?

Thanks in advance.....

By all means, do the cleanup and fan checking the other poster suggested,
it is a "housecleaning" task that should be done on a regular basis,
depending on how dusty your environment.

Here is another "simple" one. Some BIOS have options that allow you to set
the temperature for shutdown, that is worth checking since the symptoms
you describe indicate a possible heat induced shutdown when under load.
Since you didn't give any information about your system there is no way
for anyone else to know if yours is one of those or not. You will be able
to find the temperature specifications for the particular CPU in your
system at the manufacture's website. I hope it's needless to say, if this
is the problem, don't set the shutdown too high.

I was having some heat problems and did two things, 1. I put in a two fan
heatsink for my slot one motherboard, and 2. I added more Ram memory. I
first did the Ram and the DVD player worked a lot better, it became more
stable, then I placed the CPU fan in and it worked like a charm. Cooler is
always better, the more fans the better as I always think and say!
