my program refuses to load up. It gets to the Windows XP professional page
with the little blue scrolling thing in the middle and just sits there. Then
after a while, a blue screen appears and says:

A problem has been detected. Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to
your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

It says more stuff, but it would take awhile to type. It also says:

Technical Information

***Stop: OXOOOOOOED (OX8OEEOB3O, OXCOOOOO32,
OXOOOOOOOO, OXOOOOOOO)

What does this all mean and how can I get my computer up and running again
so I can take stuff off of my computer.

Boot into the Recovery Console and run this command chkdsk /f
Recovery Console How To:

More details on Unmountable Boot Volume error here

i would but...

1. i dont know what recovery console is.
2. i dont know how to boot into it.
3. this computer was a gift from a friend who got a better one, so i dont
have the disk that microsoft says i need to go into recovery console.
4. most importantly, its an old dell laptop. it doesnt have a cd-rom drive.

is there anyway to fix it without all this stuff?

It means you have a hardware problem, and without the disks there is little
you can do.
You could try booting into safe mode, to see if that works - not sure about
Dell, but usually constantly hitting Del key as soon as you turn on the sys,
gets you there

So basically, im screwed. Even though its a hardware problem, is there
absolutely nothing i can do?? (im very desperate and very strapped for cash)

If safe mode doesnt work, then you could try www.bootdisk.com download and
create a bootable floppy, there are also utilities on this site to enable
you to copy from hd to another location.
But it could be that the hd has failed, there may be a utility on Dell site
to check the hd.

Um...about that...I um...dont have a floppy drive either (dont ask, its a
long story) isnt there some way i can fix it? like can i crack it open and
like re-wire it or something? I just need to get one or two files off of it,
isnt there anything else? (Can a professional fix it like from Geek squad or
Best Buy? How much would something like that cost?)
