my computer will not boot up!

I am having problems with my new computer.

System
I am running Vista Premium with plenty of memory and processor speed.

Symtom
Once i close down the computer or enter sleep mode I can not get the
computer to re-boot. In essence I press the power button on the tower (close
down) or the mouse button (sleep mode) and the computer starts up but does
not boot up. It just keeps the fan going at high speed.

If i turn the power off at the back of the tower the computer will start up
perfectly.


I have read so many differnet issues relating to power and sleep modes but
nothing that is specifically like this.

This sounds like a defective power supply (hardware), not an operating
system problem (software). New computer with problems out of the box =
take it back immediately.

Thanks. I have sent an e-mail to the comter shop where I got it from to see
if they had any suggestions but will send it back as under warranty.

I hva ebeen looking to see if there is anything similar on any forums but to
no avail. I completely agree that it is likely to be a hardware problem
(power maybe) but what I can't understand is why it works ok once I turn the
power off and on? I am no tech head but would beinterested in your thoughts

That's a classic sign of a failing power supply. There isn't enough
"juice" to get the hard drive spinning on the first try but then the
momentum of the drive "catches" on the second or third try. Of course,
you should not take this as a definitive answer since I can't see and
test your computer myself and it could be caused by other things.
However, because the issue occurs when the operating system isn't even
loaded, you know it is hardware. Since you said this is a new computer
still under warranty, you should not hesitate to take it back for
repair/replacement.

issue as there was a forum talking about remote mice and USB - this being a
problem predominantly in sleep mode but thought I would unplug to see if it
would start. Started up first time - tried the mouse in another port -
started fine, put it back and it did not start up. I think I have a USB
which is not set up correctly or damaged. arghhhhhh computers, enough to
make you lose your hair!!

Thanks for your time and help. You have made me aware that it was a
hardware issue as I was not getting past the POST stage. It is funny reading
the forums now and people blaming Vista for everything )

scratch that - my mouse has the same effect in each USB - i am hoping it is
how the USB are set up.

Unfortunately that is far too common now days. Ignorance, not stupidity mind
you, but just general lack of knowledge almost always results in the finger
being pointed in the wrong direction. I've been working on computers
steadily since 1981, so there are just certain things I and others just
instinctively know to look for. Certain sounds ( I can still to this day
listen to a Laser Jet and tell you what's wrong), a certain sequence of or
lack of events. My fiancé did much the same as you, her system would not
boot, and she blamed it on XP. Until I pointed out that the BIOS wasn't
showing her boot drive. Turned out to be a bad SATA connector on her
motherboard. I moved it to another connector, her BIOS picked it back up,
set the boot sequence, and poof she was back in business.

I apologize for this being a bit long winded, but it just proves what you
were saying about not always pointing the finger at Vista all the time,
because it just may not BE Vista's fault.

virtually owns one. The forums are usually the best way to educate myself as
I am no computer expert )

Do you know why my wireless mouse would stop the computer starting up? It
does not get past POST. However when i remove the mouse it starts ok. I can
also plug in the mouse when in Windows and it will work ok. I am assuming it
is the BIOS settings but I am no expert and will have to read forums until my
head hurts again. I am hoping that this suggests I do not have a power
supply issue.

Now this is purely speculation, but I have seen a bad/broken USB port do
that. I am of course assuming that it connects through the USB system. I can
do PS/2 or USB with mine. One of the contacts may be shorting. If this is
the case, your system won't start because it can't complete the POST. These
problems are a bit harder to troubleshoot as you do not get something like
the "Click of Death" from a drive failure to point to where the problem
actually lies.
