My computer was stolen

I had XP Professional on my lap top. Temporarily I will be using a computer
from home to fill in before I buy a new one. It has Windows 98 and has
problems working on our network. Is there any way I could load XP for free
on it since I have already paid for it?

What happened to your laptop and the copy of XP on it? If you
still have that copy of XP, and you removed it from the laptop,
and it's a retail copy, not an OEM one, yes, you can now install
it on another computer. Otherwise no.

There are ways to "load XP for free" but I don't think many of them are
legal. Assuming the stolen computer had an OEM version on it, that copy is
bound to the computer. Even if it were still in your posession the EULA
wouldn't allow using it on another machine (although enforceability of the
EULA is a matter of contention in these parts). If, you had a retail copy
of XP and were still in posession of the COA, I think that MS would allow
for installation if reactivation became an issue. If it were more than 120
days since the last activation, you could install and activate and let the
thief worry about reactivation in the future. If you are in posession of a
legally-obtained retail COA, you own the license.

You may have already paid for it, but the license was
also stolen along with the laptop. You'll need to purchase
a new Windows XP license.

What is the difference between OEM versions, retail copys, volume licensing,
beta? Its all confusing to be honest. With all the software piracy going on.
How to tell if something is an OEM or retail? We have disklaying around
everywhere.
