My computer turns itself on

In the last three days my XP Pro at home on a 2.4 GHz ASUS machine has been
turning itself on. I can see in the event log that it is coming on and I do
not know why. The times do not suggest any pattern. This machine is not
hibernating, it was shut down. I've had this machine for at least a year
and this has not happened before to my knowledge. I say it is turning
itself on but I cannot imagine something external or internal causing it.

It happened twice yesterday(Monday) and twice today(Tuesday) and once
Sunday. Am I wrong in thinking that the Wake on LAN and other wakeup
mechanisms only work for a hibernating machine?

Hi,

Those settings can cause the machine to turn on. Check the system BIOS, as
one of them is most assuredly enabled.

Hi Rick,

I had the same problem with a computer at work. In my case it turned out to
be a faulty on/off switch. People thought I was nuts when I told them my
computer was on when I came in in the morning. It was a mystery until I saw
the event happen and then knew it was the switch.

Yes, you're wrong. Those settings can bring a machine back from 'soft
off' as well.

It turned out to be a modem that I had installed. Whenever someone called
our telephone, my computer turned itself on!
