OK, here we go. I started to upgrade my husband's computer from 98SE to XP.
At this point the computer will not boot up. I have spent over 6 hours with
MS Tech Support and the best they can tell me is that I need to have someone
retreive the 98 files and folders before we go any further. Since I can no
longer get to 98, how can we do this? Do I have to by another hard drive and
slave the info onto the new one? Would this work? XP has been downloaded
but nothing will boot up. I can not even get to "safe mode".

Hi,

What happens when you try to boot?

Your options:

a) Remove the drive and slave it in another machine. Recover data from
there.

b) Get a second hard drive, set it up as master and install WinXP clean on
it. Recover your data from there.

c) Boot the WinXP CD, start the installer. After the license screen, see if
you are given the option to repair the existing installation.

Thanks for your input. What happens is the the "Compaq" screen appears and
then nothing but a blank screen. It sounds like the computer is trying to
boot but then everythin stops. What do I need to purchase to slave the old
hard drive to the new ? Do I do this after I install XP? How hard would it
be for me to replace the harddrive?

Hi,

You don't need to purchase anything other than the hard drive. I would not
attach the old drive until after the installation is complete.
