my computer keeps shutting down by itself and i dont know
what to do. to get it working again i have to umplug it
for about 5 mins, then try to turn it back on. also it
gets really hot in the back of the tower. this problem
has only been happening recently.

Overheating can be caused by

A failed or failing PSU (power supply unit)
Failed or failing fans
Overclocking
Bad air venting

The PC is automatically set to shut down when it reaches a certain
temperature to prevent damage to the internal components.

Check all internal fans.... if you see nothing immediately wrong (ie all the
fans appear to be turning and are clear of dust) change the PSU.

I think that this is a power supply issue.. leave the
cover and see how it is.. try running a table fan on the
power supply itself.. see if the computer keeps
running.. of course this doesn't fix it but it may
identify it.. If possible try swapping out a power supply
to see if the temperature is less.. and try to do any of
this soon.. i've seen many a power supply ruin a mobo
among other things.. good luck..
