I have been having problem after problem with my
computer. I knew nothing at all about computers when i
got this one.It was a custom built computer and two
months after we got the thing the company that made it
closed down. They had built a computer for a friend who
recommened them to me. There goes the warranty out the
window.I went to another company to get them check out
the computer for me, they told me that we were ripped off
big time (suprise suprise) Now since i have the computer
back from them it is worse than ever. I will put a list
here of all that is wrong with the computer, if anyone
can help with even one of these issues i would greatly
appreciate it.
I have windows XP...
1)My scanner is no longer compatiable with the win xp,
says i have to download new driver.so i did ...still does
not work.
2) Shockwave will not load i am told over and over that i
have to restart....
3)I have to turn off the computer from the tower, when i
try to shut down from the start menu the computer just
restarts.
4)digital cam not found anymore in programming even after
i uninstall and reinstall.
5)When i open my computer i no longer have a flopy disk
drive. So i cant save to floppy anymore..
6)burner wont burn anything other than music
7)I have to send error reports about 20 times per week
8) My history is being deleted on its own i can have it
open one minute and the next minute it is empty..

This is actually just the tip of the iceburg, I am really
at a loss here i am so frustrated it is unbelievable.

Simple one..
First - backup any data important to you.

Then go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/expertzone/columns/honeycutt/02october07.asp

or here:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm

This should give you a clean system. You may also want to (I think the
first article mentions it) get the name of the video card, the sound card,
the network card, etc.. Download the newest driver from the manufacturers
web page or write down the name of the component at the very least to find
later.

That's what I was getting at. (-;

Start over clean. If you have important information on the computer you need
to save, you might consider removing the current hard drive and purchasing a
new hard drive to use for the clean install.
Disconnect your scanner and other USB devices, then do a clean install.
After XP is installed, download the latest XP drivers for your scanner and
anyother hardware that needs updates before installing. Install your
software and then reinstall the old hard drve as a slave drive to retreive
the information. If this seems too difficult, you may want to have a shop do
it for you.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

It looks like you were ripped off again. Reinstalling an OS seems to me to
be above your computer skill level, and XP isn't the easiest OS to install
either. Find some lonely computer geek in you area, and play the helpless
women role. Get the geek to fix you up, sex him up a few times of times
over a couple of weeks, to make sure he fix your computer up, and it stays
that way for a while. Then when your sure your computer is working right,
dump the geek, but start looking for a new geek to have in reserve for your
next computer meltdown.

Actually, I wouldn't give them any better odds if it was Win 98 they were
installing. The OP seems to be a chronic computer illiterate [no offence
intended, some wear the designation as a badge of honor] since this computer
has been running for close to two years prior to the problem. The OP seems
to have gained no computer skills over this time period and I doubt the OS
would have made a difference.
Being computer illiterate is not really something to be ashamed of, but it
can be an inconvenience

So you didn't think it was a little bit over the line for me to tell her
to go 'ho for tech support, and only disagreed with my characterization
of XP being a harder OS for her to install?

What's this world coming to, when people take copyrighted material more
seriously than their fellow human beings? ;-)

Colleen,

Do you have any paperwork for the computer?

What hardware is installed?
