my coloumn id's have #'s ie 1,2,3 & I want to see alpha ie A,B,C

I opened a blank workbook in excel (2003) and my coloumn id's were numbers in
lieu of alpha characters. How do I reset this to be Alpha's?
 
Click TOOLS in the menu and select OPTIONS. Click the GENERAL tab and remove
the check next to R1C1 REFERENCE STYLE in the settings panel.
