My Calendars in folder list view?

Under MY CALENDARS a number appears (8) what does this mean? and how do you
view it?

It means that there are eight unread items in the calendar. Display that
calendsr in a table view and it should make them easy to spot.
Alternatively, right-click the calendar and choose Mark All as Read.
