Well, working in an environment that has both Windows and Linux, I'd say
that it is 6 to one and a half a dozen to another. Windows Vista does have
it's problems, but from what I hear from my peers concerning Linux, it too
has it's problems, it is primarily GEEK-ware and not ready for my wife, let
alone anyone not geekish; and that readily admitted all of the
Linux-o-phytes I know. The one that tickles me is the conversation(s)
typically heard in the halls "Well it works on RedHat" "yeah but it won't
compile on SusE" "What compiler are you using?" "The one I used on AIX" "Oh
well everyone knows that won't work on Ubuntu" "Yeah but I tried it on
Ubuntu on the AIX" "Oh? What version of Ubuntu?" etc etc etc etc etc etc
The out of the box XWindows environment I have had the misfortune of trying
to use on SusE is a literal piece of crap. Sorry, but I'm used to the Mac
and Windows environment that may be considered toasters, but at least allow
me to intuitively, from the very moment after install, to manage files and
launch apps. The SusE GUI was obscure, to say the least, and useless to say
the best, forcing me to go to the command line to do the build I needed to
do.
I dunno ... Windows XP, or Windows Vista does indeed seem a hell of alot
simpler than which version of which compiler you need on RedHat to do an
install that won't work on SusE and Ubuntu simply obfuscates the issue for
all of them. Seems like Micrsoft needs to exploit that in a discussion
between PC and Mac in a counter commercial ...
