My 1394 Ports won't recognize my camcorder after SP2

Ok here's the deal. I've been working with Microsoft on this issue for about
3 weeks. Spoke with 4 individuals during this time. The Bottom line is that
microsoft has concluded that there is a bug in SP2 with the new security
software that is creating all of our issues that will cause most of our
camcorders to not be recognized with 1394 ports. They do not have a fix as
of yet and they gave me no ETA. So here's where I need your help. Everyone
that is experiencing the same problem that I'm having needs to contact
Microsoft. Through email, voice calls you name it. If enough people
complain about it, maybe they will work on a fix faster to fix our problem.
Please email me or reply to me if you contacted them of the problem. I would
like to keep a log of this. Thanks in advance. (e-mail address removed).

The last person was Peter GAO. He was a third level up technician. And I
just recently talked to him again. He wanted me to try another fix that came
up. But it still didn't work. If you would like more info please let me
know.

Thanks!

Jaitene, I've found a way to work around the firewire issue on two of
my three computers. (this one's running SP-1 so it's still OK) It
involves getting your hands dirty but it's worth it. Basically this is
what you have to do:

Restore the SP1 drivers for firewire. To do that you have to find these
files first and save them to a new folder, ie: firewirefix. These are
the files you will need:
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 in the sp1 cab copy out the
following files

1394bus.sys
arp1394.sys
nic1394.sys
ohci1394.sys
enum1394.sys is in C:\windows\system32\drivers (if you need it)

Ok now, rename SP2cab to SP2cabold. (if you don't, SP2 will stick it's
files back in) Go to control panel, system, device manager, hardware;
and find your firewire controller. IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers.
Update (downgrade) the drivers for your firewire controller by using
the update drivers tab. Show it the location of your firewirefix
folder. Update the files. Rename SP2cabold back to SP2cab. That's it.

FYI, I also went to the top level at MS. The last person had me install
XP Pro over the top of the XP Pro OS I already had installed;
results=disaster!
Format & reinstall SP1, applications & data. Try the above tweak and
see if it doesn't help. Post back and let me know how it turned out.

Jim, as much information as you can supply would help. Which dept he was in,
was he just in technical support or in a particualr area, such as digital
media etc.
As we are naming names, it might be best to send them off the newsgroup.
I've not come across many people at all with this problem, but with my mvp
status I can get to talk to perhaps more involved people.

Hi Graham & thanks for your interest.
It wasn't help on the forums, it was a MS incident SBZ or somethin
like that. The help came from the SP2 folks, free support, but o
little value.
The reason I say that is because I was an early adapter of SP2. No
much was known of the impact of SP2 at that time. Under thos
circumstances, I can forget & forgive the, "let's try this" tec
support I recieved.

I think what MS has to tackle with firewire is this: in the name o
security firewire was looked at as a true "networking security risk.
The screws were tightened down so much that it actually brok
firewire's connectivity with it's common use; ie: DV cameras & externa
drives. I have seen the hotfixes for firewire and I don't think that'
the answer. You can see that by the frustration of jaltene, the perso
that started this thread.

The tweak I gave her for going back to SP1 for firewire works, and yo
can still have the benifits of SP2. It's a small security price to pay
to get firewire working again. (I suppose their are people that stil
network with firewire)

So rather than use time trying to name names of failed support folks,
really think MS should come out with a work around like I suggested fo
the people that can't get it (firewire) to work anymore. Maybe i
SP2a.
Best,
Treema

Thanks Treeman. I will try it this weekend. I'm pretty busy during the
week. I will let you know if this fix works. And your right. MS needs to
fix this.

Thanks,
Jim

Treeman,

I don't have sp1.cab on my computer. I also have a service 1 disk and I
couldn't find it there. Could you by chance email your sp1.cab? It's not
very big.

Thanks,
Jim

Well hear is the update. I figured out how to get it from my other disk.
and installed the old drivers. It still did not work for me. My firewire
still didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

I am also trying to fix my firewire issue. I am to the following step:
Where is SP2cab so I can rename it. Thank you for your help. I have
been working on this problem for hours now and I feel very close now.

mokehil,
If you have SP2 installed, the SP2cab is in the root directory of C:,
If you can't see past Windows Explorer's dumb "My Computer" setup, yo
can have the tree expanded all the time by doing this.
Right Cick on all your Explorer icons and go to properties, copy
paste this into the "Target," box:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\
Notice there is a space between .exe and /n,/e,C:\
Your tree will be automatically expanded to full view. You will se
everything from your A drive down. Now see if you can spot the SP
folder. Or you can just do a search for it.
