Must Play file with WMP to Connect

I recently re-installed Windows XP Home on a computer after formatting the
drive.
After doing so, I was unable to connect to the internet or my LAN, so I
contacted the manufacturer of my router who ran through their troubleshooting
and came up empty. I have a cable modem, and the cable company said they can
see the modem, so then I thought maybe it was the LAN adapter. Replaced
it--no luck.

Then my daughter found a work-around... simply playing a file using MS
Windows Media player, we can browse the internet... stop playing the file,
and the connection is lost. Start it again, and we're back in business.
The anomaly affects both internet and LAN connectivity (3 pcs connecting
using Linksys router--the other 2 are fine).

Any ideas?

Troy,

Check your LSP / Winsock layer.

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.
