Music not sounding in powerpoint

I recently made a personal powerpoint slide show for my husband with music
playing. I have tried to make my mother a slide show, but the song I picked
doesn't play. I did everything the same. Could it be a "year" problem as my
husband's song was older? I'm using the same Powerpoint 2003 product.

Everyone hates this question, but what was the source of the song file and
what format is it in?

What type of file is it? MP3 or WAV or WMA? Where is it stored. If the full
path exceeds 128 characters it won't play. Do you have it stored someplace in
My Documents? Try moving it to C:\Test, for example, and delete and re-insert
the link to the file. Now play the presentation. Does the sound play?
