Munging e-mail address in OE

I was surprised to receive a response (at home) to one of my posts, when I
thought I had munged the e-mail address. I had not entered anything in the
second address box in OE Tools, Accounts. Here's what the OE Help says about
that box. What does the last sentence mean?

Specifies that you want replies to your outgoing messages sent to a
different e-mail address, which you can type here.
For example, you might send messages through one e-mail
(e-mail address removed)-and specify that you want replies sent to
(e-mail address removed).
If you do not select this option, replies to your e-mail messages are sent
to the e-mail account from which you send them.

That sentence means that if you use the reply to field in the account
properties, then replies will be sent to where you specified. If you don't
use the reply to box, then replies goto the email address that it was sent
from.

Depending on how you munge your email address, a person may
be able to decipher it.

The question you have about the OE news setup is just what
it says, if you put a valid email in the second field,
replies to your posts will be sent to that address.
Reply All goes to the newsgroup, reply goes to the sender.

But I had put nothing in the second field, so "the e-mail account from which
you send them" should have been the munged address used in the first field.
No?

Yes, but maybe it wasnt munged very well? Or someone just retyped it in? Was
it there in one form or another (like mine for example?)

I can't say how it was done, but perhaps you included some
clue.

No, it wasn't there in any form. The respondent, however, had an e-mail
address (as indicated in Properties) at Microsoft.com--so maybe he just
knows something none of us knows. I replied asking him how he got my e-mail
address and he never replied.

I doubt its becase he was from microsoft, but its certainly possible to get
it via your ISP 'if you know someone' unless you posted via an anonymous
remailer. oR he might have access to some kind of lookup facility if he's in
the right dept.

One other possibility, were there other details in the email (partial name,
interest area, whatever) that could be used to cross reference you via
previous posts that did have your email?

I looked carefully at the Properties and Advanced pages and see nothing that
remotely suggests my actual e-mail address.
