multisession cd's

I recently purchased a new computer which brought with it
XP. One thing that I could do in 98se was easily switch
between sessions (volumes) in a multisession cd, for
example an enhanced audio cd. All you had to do was go to
properties for the cd, click on the volumes tab, and
choose the volume you want. Does anyone know how to do
this in XP? Why is it so hard to find out anyway? All I
want to do right now is play an audio track in winamp, but
I can't find the cda files to do so. Also, using any good
burning software, you can create multisession cds, but
they are useless if you can't switch between sessions.
The old sessions pretty much become useless lost files.

I think with these kinds of file you have to tell the application (player)
what kind of files to look for. So for Media Player for example, you have to
select Audio for cda or Video for .avi etc.

You cannot browse a mixed CD with a player and see all the files.

Hi,

It's because WinXP's ability to read CD's created with packet writing
software is limited. You need to install software that has that capability
(preferably the same program as was used to create them). You had that
functionality in Win98 because you had the software installed, it's not
something that was native to the OS (and, incidentally, Win98 had no support
at all for CD's written in this manner).

I am not trying to view the files with applications, I am
trying to view them with "My Computer" or Windows
Explorer. In 98, right clicking on the drive and clicking
on properties, then clicking on the volumes tab would
bring up a list of all the volumes on a cd, from which you
could double click on one and be able to view that volume
in Windows Explorer. From there, I would drag them to an
application. In xp, I can't find how to do that.

The inbuilt burning is basic. It burns either simple audio CDs - which
it closes against further burning, because the 'domestic' players do not
deal in multiple sessions- or ISO sessions which it closes, leaving the
disk open. If you put one of those back, and take the 'Autoplay' option
to open and view files in Explorer' you will be able to add a further
session, chained to the previous one. But nothing more elaborate than
that. Chaining into earlier sessions needs a third party, full facility
package like Nero or Easy CD

With respect, Rick, multiple sessions, as queried, has nothing to do
with packet writing - it is he ability to work with disks where batches
of files are burned, in standard CD modes, in a series of sessions

Thanks Alex, I misread the question. Actually, I only slimmed it without
reading thoroughly and jumped to a conclusion. Must not have had enough
coffee yet....
