Multiple XP installations in a single partition?

Hi,

My XP installation somehow got messed up and I can't access the
Internet using it. I suspect the TCP/IP components got currupted and
neither System Restore nor the Web could help me. I tried a million
things without success.

I do not want to format this partition but to simply install a new
instance of the Windows XP in a separate directory like C:\WINDOWS2
and be able to boot the instance of my choice (i.e. either C:\WINDOWS
or C:\WINDOWS2)

Is the above possible?

I am planning to use this for a temporary period of time until I have
time to reinstall all my programs.

Thank you

You will still have to install your programs in order to use them on your
second installation of Win XP. Programs, upon install, write tons of entries
to Windows Registry. Those entries will not exist in the registry of you new
installation of Win XP until those programs go through their install
routine.

Save yourself the pain of managng 2 Windows installations on one partition.

It is not for the fainthearted or novice, neither is it advised by Microsoft. One expects that it was never dsesigned for this crazieness.

Go for broke and do it properly now.

Hi,

Have you tried a repair installation yet? See this site for instructions:

Otherwise, yes you can do a parallel installation though I would not
recommend it as a permanent solution. Simply start installation, indicate a
new install and designate the new installation directory. The dual boot
setup should be automatic.
