Somehow I have created a spreadsheet with 2 versions although there is only
one file shown in Explorer. When I open it. it loads "spreadsheet:1" and
"spreadsheet:2" . How do I stop this so I only have one version?

You're actually showing 2 windows of the same file.
Select 'Window' on the menu bar and you'll see two files listed with the
only difference being :1 or :2
Just click the 'x' button (the lower of the two in top right corner) as if
you were closing the file but leaving Excel open and one of the windows will
go.
