edited spreadsheet saves as template

Each time I save my Excel spreadsheet after editing it saves as template.
This has created a problem with duplicate copies of the spreadsheet. I'm
using Office 2003 version. How do I stop this from happening?

One particular workbook or any workbook?

Do they(it) open as *.xls and save as *.xlt

I would first check Tools>Options>Transition and see what file format is
selected as default "Save format"

Thanks for your reply.

It seems to be any workbook I do edits on. I just created a test excel
workbook, and after I opened and edited it, it created a template. Original
file name: new book.xls Name of additional file created after editing: new
book.xls~RF4d66ca4d.TMP.

I did check under Transitions, and I am set for "Save Excel Files as:
Microsoft Office Excel Workbook"

That is not a Template...........it is a temporary file which Excel creates
whenever a workbook is opened and is normal behaviour for Office
applications.

These *.tmp files are usually deleted when the workbook is closed and/or
Excel has been closed.

Sometimes you have to re-boot to get rid of them.

Saved from a previous post:

If those .tmp files look like: ...\VB*.tmp

I searched google again for "\vb" and .tmp and got a few hits.

One person posted that they saw files that had names like: ~RF26c83af.TMP.

It was caused by AVG.

You can read her description in this thread:

A while ago, someone posted back that uninstalling something called "Panda
ClientShield" fixed a similar problem.

Even if you're not running "Panda ClientShield", you could try disabling this
program to see if the problem goes away.

ps. I didn't remember correctly. That thread from Wendy (#7) does indeed point
to AVG as the culprit.

Thanks you both for getting back to me. It is a temp file and not template (I
should have known that). I am not running AVG, I believe you're talking about
the virus software? I have Trend Micro Internet Security. Any other thoughts?

I just disabled Trend Micro virus software, tried editing and saving the
workbook and it did not create the temp file. The problem is I have to turn
it back on to protect my pc. I guess I will try to contact Trend Micro about
the problem. Thanks again for all the help!

Thanks for posting back.

It's surprising that both AVG and TrendMicro create temp files with the same
name.

Problem solved!! I contacted Trend Micro and they said upgrading the program
would solve the problem. They emailed me a link to upgrade, and that finally
solved the problem of the temp files!!

Thanks again for posting back.

Nice to see that Excel (and Microsoft) were found innocent in this case <vbg>.
