Multiple User Accounts & Desktop Icons

Hi! I just set up my new computer and we created three user accounts on our
XP. Why is it that when one user deletes an icon on the desktop, it deletes
the icons for the other two users? Is there a way to stop this?

Thank you!

The Desktop you see is a combination of two folders.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
or %allusersprofile%\Desktop
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Desktop
or %userprofile%\Desktop

All Users Desktop: Refers to the desktop common for all the users.

User Desktop: Refers to the desktop of that user.

Anything deleted by one user from the All Users Desktop will be removed from
everyone elses Desktop also.

Tell them to quit deleting stuff from the Desktop.

You will have the same problem with the Start Menu.

Start Menu and Desktop are NameSpaceExtensions which show the combined
contents of two folders at one time.

The Start Menu that you see is a combination of both of these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
or %allusersprofile%\Start Menu
and
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Start Menu
or %userprofile%\Start Menu

All Users Start Menu: Refers to the start menu common for all users.

User Start Menu: Refers to the start menu of that user.

Right click on Start.
Copy the Desktop shortcuts and Start Menu from All Users to each user.

Related problem. I'm getting multiple shortcuts on the desktop and start
menu. Up to 4 and 5 shortcuts. I go thru and delete back to one and when I
restart they start coming back. Config is a 6 PC LAN, no server, with
multiple user, XP Home. Started on one machine, now a second machine is doing
it. Ran multiple virus scans which has not helped.

I have the same problem, but I am not sure I follow the procedure you
mentioned on how to correct this. Can this be explained more thoroughly?
Thanks.
