multiple text layers in a slide

I have seen a powerpoint presentation for chuch song services.
In one slide there is picture background and three song verses
each of which is overlayered.
i.e. first verse at the bottom, second verse in the
middle layer, third verse on top. These verses look all mixed up
on the design slide. On the show, only first verse shows up on a key,
then second verse on a key, third on a key.
Designing this way can save number of slides.- i.e. insted of having
three seperate slides for each verses, one slide is used containing
all three verses.
Could someone explain how to do this?

Sure, in PowerPoint 2002 (PowerPoint XP) or better, you can do this, but ...

In my church, we sometimes skip verses (if the minister runs on a bit), or
repeat sections of the song (common with praise songs). Using animations
instead of transitions to navigate between the verses, will make navigating
this rather difficult.

To set it up the way you are requesting would require that each verse
textbox has an entrance animation and an exit one. The key is to have the
exit (verse 1) start with the entrance (verse 2).

Is this along the lines of what you need?
