Multiple startup file locations

Templates in Word XP are taken from two locations (i.e.
workgroup templates and user templates) and merged
together. Is there any mechanism for achieving the
equivalent with the Startup folder?

I would like the Startup folder to be on the network so it
can be managed centrally. However, applications such as
Adobe Acrobat load a template into the Word startup folder
and I don't want this template to appear in the network
startup folder as it will then be visible to everyone
regardless of whether they have Adobe installed.

Hi, Simon,

I just tested this (in Word 2000) and it works: In the real (local) Startup
folder, place a shortcut to each template in the network folder. Word will
load the templates through the shortcuts just as if they were local, in
addition to any templates that are actually present in the local Startup
folder (which is where the Acrobat template will stay).

Jay,

Many thanks for your repsonse. It tests OK on Word XP as
well. It'll require more administration than is ideal,
but it looks workable.

One issue I've noticed which relates to another post I've
recently put on the newsgroup: I've been running with
high macro security, with nothing signed but with "Trust
all installed add-ins and templates" selected. The
templates pointed to by a shortcut in this way are then
unable to run macros. As best I can see, you can't trust
templates from a particular folder on the network apart
from those which appear under Tools/Options/File
Locations. If anyone knows better, I'd love to hear from
them.

Simon.
