I get multiple programs on my PC reporting the same overly generic Windows XP
error message "Program name encountered a problem and needs to close"

First of all, the fact Microsoft would report such a generic error message
without any additional debug information is ludicrous.

That said, is there actually any way to get more information as to teh cause
of this condition? I get this same error with the Cannon ESO Utility and the
NY Time Reader.

Have you looked in the software section of the Event Viewer?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I checked and there is nothing in the Application section of the Event
Viewer logged at the time of the error. I reproduced the errors and double
checked the event log - nothing.
