Multiple Personal Folders in Outlook 2000

In Outlook 2000, I have 3 personal Folders and pst files, all slightly
different. I know the current pst file that I want to use, but when I sync
my Windows Mobile based smart phone, it syncs to the wrong pst file. How do
I tell Outlook which pst file to sync? Is it saft to delet the improper pst
files?

Your problem is an example of why it is not a good idea to have more than
one PST file. Why do you? What were you trying to achieve by having multiple
files?
You cannot delete a PST file from Outlook. No, it is not safe to simply
delete a PST file from Windows Explorer until you first disconnect it from
your Outlook profile.
Clarify what you want to do.

The multiple files resulted from a changeover to a new computer several years
ago and from a system restore. The multiple files somehow happened. They
were not on purpose. For the reload and restore, I copied the file and did
not try import/export. It was too long ago to recall the step by step. My
desire now is to have only one file and have my phone sync to it. I am just
an ordinary guy trying to make things work - nothing fancy!

ActiveSync always uses your default PST for synching. That's the PST that
receives your messages when you connect to your mail server. If you want it
to sync with a different PST, you have to change your delivery location. This
will, of course, change the calendar where new events are stored, the folder
where new contacts are placed, and so on.

Just right-click the root of the PSTs you don't wish to see and choose Close.
You won't be able to do this with your default PST, but the others will close.

This depends on whether you're using Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode or
Corporate/Workgroup mode. Help>About will tell you.

For IMO, select the root of the PST you want to be the default. Click
File>Properties. There should be a setting there to make that PST the
delivery location. Choose that, then stop and restart Outlook. For C/W,
click Tools>Services. You should be able to find the delivery location
setting there. I'm sorry, but I don't recall the wording. It has been too
long since I last saw it.

I am in IMO mode. I followed Tillman's guidance selecting the desired
default pst, then file > properties. I get an error message that closes
Outlook. Tried several times, same result, so I have been unable to get past
this. What now?

Have you tried a repair install? Help>Detect and Repair.

program).
