multiple operating systems

Carl

All I wanted to do was install another hard drive....

it is physically in the machine. Two dirves a seagate
first and maxtor second in a cable select configuration.
Drice C: is 20g and Drive d: 160g.

In the installation process I somehow managed to get
about 6 operating systems on my C: drive all windows XP.

Does anyone know how to remove all of the extra operating
systems?

Thanks

Carl,

You are not very likely to have six copies of XP on your system. What may
have happened is you tried the install 6 times, had problems and on the
sixth time it work. This indicates your boot.ini file has too many entries.

Take a look at the program msconfig - Click Start, Run, type in msconfig.exe
and press enter.

On the 3rd tab - Boot.Ini you may see you have multiple lines under the
heading [operating systems]

If you see lines that are 100% duplicates then delete them.

Or maybe try the Check All Boot Paths command (I have never noticed it
before) click that and see what happens. Perhpas that is smart enough to
tidy it for you.

Note: to boot off C drive the line should read something like:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional"

The 1 indicates the first disc partition on your C drive.

If you have problems post back with details of what is in your boot.ini file
along with details of the partitions on your discs.

EG
Disc 1
Partition 1 = C Drive = 40GB

I have a different problem, but in the same ballpark.

I was in the middle of XP Pro setup to make a few changes to XP already
installed when I changed my mind and clicked through all the cancel
buttons. The next time I started the machine, I got a choice of 'XP Pro'
and 'XP Pro Setup'.

I went the the boot.ini tab in msconfig and saw them both listed. There
doesn't seem to any way to delete the 'XP Pro Setup' line. I set the
default to 'XP Pro', restarted a few time, but it's always the same screen.

Can anybody tell me how to delete the 'XP Pro Setup' line?
