Multiple Instances of Excel 2000

C

Chris Brady

I have Excel 2000 (SR - 1) running under Windows XP.

If I select a number of Excel documents in Windows Explorer and then
hit Enter instead of all of the documents opening into a single
instance of Excel, they each open up an instance of Excel which then
crashes my PC due to memory problems.

What's the setting I need to use to stop this please?

Many thanks -

CJB.

Chris,

Are you sure they are new "instances" of Excel. Excel 2000, by default,
shows an icon for each open workbook. However, this does not mean there is a
new instance of Excel open for each workbook. Please try the steps in the
following article to turn off this feature in Excel.

Hope this helps.

I'm guessing that Greg was going to point to an article that said something like
this:

Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

And if that didn't help:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

But if I'm wrong, I gonna bet that Greg corrects me and posts the link.

You sure this is the article you meant?

Although very interesting, it looks like it deals with MSWord.

Yup. There is a paragraph in the article that deals with XL and PPT.
