Multiple clicks

I'm running XP Pro on an AMD Athlon 2100+.

For a few weeks now I've been hearing multiple 'clicks' when I open a
folder on a hard disc, or when I click on a link in IE6. This doesn't
happen every time, but enough to be annoying. The folder or link opens
correctly but there seems to be some hesitation in the opening process when
this happens.

Anyone able to shed light on why this might be happening? I can't tie it
down to a change in software or hardware...

Control Panel> Sound and Audio Devices> Sounds. In the Windows Events
section, scroll down to Windows Explorer> Start Navigation and highlight it.
Click the preview button. Is that the faint click noise you're hearing? If yes,
change the assigned sound to "None" to eliminate the clicking noise.

That's the noise, but not the problem.

The problem is that from time to time I get multiple sound clicks from just
one click of the mouse. Sometimes around 6 or 8 of them before the new IE
window or folder opens.

Until recently there was one noise click for each mouse click...

If it seems restricted to clicking IE links, the extra "click" noises may
be signifying page refreshes or redirects.
