I have German, Polish and of course US installed in Windows XP Home Edition
for Word 2000. I have the virtual keyboard and all seems fine except for one
annoyance I'm at a loss on how to fix. I often type things in Word to spell
check and then copy and paste it into things like web email etc. I've
noticed the ' mark changes to ` or something similar once I paste it into a
web mail program. Then when I send the email the ` mark changes to a ? and
it just looks bad when I'm sending cover letters:

I?m submitting my resume....

You get the picture. Is there a work around to this or do I have to
keep editing out the ` with '? I have the SP3 kit for office that updated
word. US is the default keyboard setting on this system.

It seems this is due to a Unicode character that isn't supported by the program
you're pasting into. Or the webmail program has some kind of AutoCorrect going
that's transforming the character into Unicode, and that's being lost when you
send.

If you type similar text in the Windows Notepad, then copy/paste it into the
webmail do you still see the same, or does it look different?

I use firefox as the browser and I can change the font it uses.

If I paste from Word 2000 into notepad it shows this mark, ’ but if I type
that same key in notepad it shows this one '

’ is the one that seems to do the ? and I can't figure out why it happens.

This is smart quotes in Word. When you type a straight quote, Word will
automatically change it to a curly quote (in English) or an appropriate
equivalent character in other languages. It could well be the case that a
web textbox is not fully Unicode-compliant and cannot deal with the results.

For a single occasion you can just press Ctrl-z after typing it. To stop it
happening all the time, uncheck the "Replace Quotes with Smart Quotes"
option in AutoFormat and AutoFormat As You Type.

That did it, I unchecked it both in 'auto format' and 'auto format as you
type', here I've been messing with fonts. Like I said it pasted into notepad
that way too so I knew it had to be something with MS Word. Thank you both
for your help and I'll definately note this so I never lose this info!
