Multilevel list

When I hit Enter in my list, a new item (1,2,3 or A., B., C.) is not created.
It's as though I hit Enter twice and exited this list. Anyone else
experiencing this (i.e. the list not creating new items)?
 
For Word up to 2003, tools > autocorrect options > autoformat as you type >
check automatic numbered lists.
For Word 2007 the similar option is at Word Options > Proofing > Autocorrect
Options etc.

This should not be necessary if a numbered style (or a number format) has
been applied, only if the OP is typing 1. Text, and then expecting 2. when
he presses Enter.
