Multifunction Printer Issue

I have been trying to solve this problem for weeks with no luck. I am dual
booting XP SP2 and Vista with no problem. I purchased a USB Canon MP160
Printer which works fine with Vista. However, in XP the driver will not
install. It seems this is a Dell and HP issue mostly. Canon phone support
suggested reinstalling XP as they ran out of suggestions. I have
downloaded a new driver from the Canon website but that was no help. Dell
tech support also suggested reinstalling XP. Device Manager shows the
printer under the USB hubs as MP160 with a yellow exclamation point. Any
ideas how to get this working would really be appreciated.

Determine whether or not the problem can actually be solved. Part of
the underlying problem is just where werethe printer drivers placed
relative to the positioning of the different OS's. First question: Are
Windows XP and Windows Vista in their own partitions, e.g., Drive C
and Drive D? Second question: Where were the printer drivers placed?
That is, for both XP and Vista, were the printer's drivers for XP and
Vista put into the same, named folder on Drive C or were they installed
into separate folders folders that correspond to partitions of the two
OS's? If the printer drivers were placed into a common folder, then
then don't waste the time at re-installing either one or the other OS.

It is always a good idea to put each OS of a multi-boot configuration
into its own partition. However, the caveat regarding common folders
needs better explanation. While many developers typically put their
drivers into Drive C without giving any thought or the alternative of a
"custom" location, there are some that also use the same file names as
well even though the actual driver files are for different versions of
Windows. But the caveat is not needed if the different versions of the
driver files uses different file names.
