Multicast Routing

Neil

Hello,

I am having a problem forwarding multicast packets, possibly because I
am doing something wrong.

Here's how things are set up:

Satellite Multicast Network Adapter - 192.168.238.238
Local Network - 192.168.0.2
Laptop - 192.168.0.3

Routing and Remote Access is enabled on my Windows 2000 Server, along
with IGMP added as a routing protocol.

The problem is this - I can recieve multicast packets fine (for video,
etc) on the satellite network card, however the packets will not
forward to the local network, so I cannot view multicast video through
the network on my laptop. I have never set up multicast routing
before, however I have tried setting IGMP proxy and router mode on the
192.168.238.238 adapter, and whilst it finds all the multicast hosts,
nothing seems to happen. Has anyone else had any experience of this
or know of a "How To" guide where I can read up on how to do this ?

Thanks

Neil Webster

Brian,

This is what I am trying to do:

I have a one way satellite internet connection, which I use in
conjunction with my dial-up connection to get broadband speeds as it
is not available in my area. The satellite DVB card recieves all
traffic in multicast, which is fine for just general surfing as the
client software the satellite company provides some software for the
surfing side of things.

The problem comes whenever I want to stream anything in multicast -
the initial request is made by modem, which triggers the satellite to
start streaming, which works fine on the machine with the card in, as
I can view video, audio, etc in multicast at 1 - 2 mbps. What I want
to do is enable other machines on my network to view the video, but
none of the multicast traffic gets through. I have installed a
software multicast sniffer, and it shows no traffic, which is why I
thought I would need to route the traffic. I have currently got it
set up as IGMP proxy mode on my satellite card, and IGMP router mode
on the LAN card - I can see the table filling up with multicast
addresses, but they never forward to the LAN.

I have tried looking in the help files, and on the net but can't find
anything - the closest I did find was someone who had managed to do it
with Linux, but there was no detail on how it was done. The satellite
company refuse to help as it is an "unsupported configuration" in
other words, they don't know!

Thanks

Neil
