Multi Monitor Icon Color Problem

H

HFX

I have done several Goggle searches, along with some MSDN and Microsoft's
main site on this problem but I cannot seem to find it mentioned anywhere.
I just hooked up two monitors to my system using two video cards. The video
cards in question are a Tseng 6000ET 2MB and a NVidia Geforce 2 MX 400. I
am using an older Sceptre monitor which identifies itself as plug in play
when brought up and a ViewSonic A90. The machine is running Win2000 fully
patched to the latest drivers and security updates.

The problem I am having is that icon's refuse to display in any color better
then 256. This makes for very ugly, and since I have several icons that
look the same but color differentiates, makes it quite annoying when I'm
looking for something fast. I've tried going into the video options and
setting the effects to display icons using all possible colors. However,
all other color seems to work fine. I've also tried swapping monitors around
including swapping one monitor at a time out for a KDS (borrowed from a
friend) to try solving the problem to no avail. Has anyone had this problem
before? Anyone know of a solution? I'd really like to solve this soon.

I should note that the Tseng has the Sceptre 17" hooked up running at
1024x768x16 @ 75 hz, and the NVidia has the ViewSonic running at
1280x1024x32 @ 75 hz.

Please remember to remove the obvious spam stopper from my email before
replying directly to me. Thanks in advance for your help as I am out of
ideas.

I had this happen and I found a setting in NetMeeting that
restricted the icons to 16 colour (which is what I guess yours
are) ... and I'd not even used NetMeeting!

Try take a look in NetMeeting to see if you can find the settings
relating to remote desktops.

I looked at NetMeeting settings (had to set it up since I had never run it
although it was installed) and I can't find anything about setting icon
color. Ideas where it might be?

I too have just been pouring through the settings and I'm darned
if I can find it myself too.

I was sure that was were I found ..

Plus I found this

"Why is my Direct3D and/or AGP disabled in Windows2000? (top) -
This will occur if you have Netmeeting 3.01 running. Since
NetMeeting 3.01 is built in to Windows 2000, it cannot be
removed.

The DESKTOP SHARING element of NetMeeting DISABLES DIRECT3D and
in most cases, also disables AGP automatically.

To reenable Direct3D and/or AGP, do the following: - enable
desktop sharing by using the desktop sharing wizard. -
right-click on the Desktop sharing icon (NOT the Netmeeting icon)
in the taskbar and choose "Exit". - go back into the desktop
sharing configuration and disable Desktop Sharing. - reboot.

Direct3D and/or AGP should be restored. If your desktop icons are
now in 16 color, go into display properties, click on the Effects
tab, disable "display icons in all possible colors", click Apply,
enable "display icons in all possible colors", click "Apply"
again and your colors should be restored - do as it says, the
OpenGL & yaddayadda is irrelevant. but the stuff about
Netmeeting & stuff actually works."

I have also heard others mention disabling the "NetMeeting
Remote Desktop Sharing" in services.msc achieved the same result
after a reboot.

I tried putting the Tseng in another computer which had been using a Matrox
card. Turns out it is because the Tseng has to be primary VGA it turns off
acceleration in windows and causes some problems with settings. I noticed
a severe drop in video performance a program I'm working on and Unreal
Tournament (current interface to some robots) when the Tseng was in. Guess
I'll have to look for me a nice Matrox card to put in my machine.

Thanks for the help.
