Hi,
I have a query relating to multi-language support. I work with word
documents in multiple language, currently I use Office 2000, would moving to
Windows XP and Office 2003 assist me?

There are additional language features and feature updates if you
upgrade Office.

Moving to Windows XP will have more noticeable improvements if you are
not on Windows NT/2000 already. Multilingual support on Windows 9x or ME
is very limited.

What sort of language features are you looking for?

NB The MUI is cool, but not easily available to end-users, and so the
above link is a bit of a sideline to your question. Having a
multi-lingual interface is NOT required for the underlying
text/data/document support.

Mike,
The issue driving the push towards Office 2003 / Windows XP is for Improved
Unicode support, we encounter a lot of issues with documents in multiple
languages (One of our teams translates documents). Do you have any
recommendations for improving the performance of my Office 2000 application
or should I move to Office 2003?

Thanks

What Unicode improvements? What issues? WHat platform are you running on
now?

Windows NT and its successors in 2000 and XP have been unicode-based
from the beginning. Of course as the Unicode standard has evolved (with
VERY active participation from a handful of MS employees) so NT/2000/XP
has followed.

You see more fine-tuning of individual features throughout each Office
release - and Office 2000 is pretty long in the tooth now! But "lots of
issues" doesn't tell me anything.

Mike, Here are a list of the issues we have encountered.

The O/S is Windows 2000 Office 2000 Sp3 for a PC's.

When opening a heavily formatted document the application crashes.

When sharing documents in a multi-lingual environment, we notice and
increased number of corrupt documents once they have been saved and
re-opened.

We would like to share these heavily formatted documents with a user who
works on a MAC.

I am told that Windows XP would further compliment the Office 2003
application.

Many thanks for your assistance.

That may not having anything to do with the multilingual nature of the
documents per se, but a side-effect of having many document styles in
Word etc. I suggest checking with Office newsgroups relating to the
document type (just Word? or Excel, PPT, ??)

Making sure that everyone in the environment is up to date with Windows
and Office patches, and font versions etc will help to minimize the
variables at play.

It may even require analysis by a Microsoft support person. Whether
someone in MS support or an Office MVP, they may want to know which
languages are being used (just European, or bidirectional and/or East
Asian as well?). If third-party tools are integrated. Sometimes
integration of antivirus tools can contribute to instability (e.g. the
notorious NAV Office plug-in).

It's true that Windows XP will have fixes etc that help running
applications.
