Multi Card Reader SD, CF, etc

I have a multi card reader that will take compact flash, SD, etc cards. If I
remove the card by clicking the remove hardware item all appears to go well.
However, if I reinsert the card, or even insert a different card (replace a
CF card with a SD card) I am unable to access the card.

My work around has been to reboot the computer to access the second card.
Apparently I need to indicate that a card has been reinserted.

Any suggestions?

For memory cards you don't use the remove hardware icon as the actual
device - the card reader - is still installed.
Just pull the SD/CF/XD (etc.) card out, there isn't or shouldn't be any
write buffering.

As Mike says, it is unecessary to to the remove hardware thing before
taking out a card. Treat the reader and memory cards similarly to how
you would treat a floppy drive and disks (don't remove while the light is
flashing).

If you do the remove hardware thing, you should be able to pull the USB
cable out and reinsert it to have the reader redetected without
rebooting. But if it is an internal one, the USB cable is usually
connected internally to the motherboard, making this difficult to do.

Prepare for safe removal isn't the right chioce for
a multislot cardreader as you have seen...
Just right-click on the drive an select 'eject'
instead. This 'disconnects' the disk and file system.

Under XP for ejecting a media admin previleges are
required by default.
But this can be changed:

With this Reg-File every interactive user can eject a media:
