Multi-boot loses Win2k

I have a problem - here's the scenario:

My system is running Win2K on a 40g hard drive with 2 NTFS partitiions (C &
D). Everything is fine with this system.
I add a 2nd physical drive - another 40g, format it and put 1 NTFS partition
(E:) on it. Everything is still great.
I boot win2k and run winxp setup, and install WinXP on this new drive E:.
Everything appears to go great.
Multi-boot menu (boot.ini) is updated, both operating systems appear on menu
and I can boot into WinXP fine.

When I try to boot into Win2K, the initial screen comes up, progress bar on
bottom of screen increments, but no text ("Starting Windows 2000" or
whatever it says).
Next the White logo screen comes with blue progress bar incrementing. 2-3
seconds later, BSOD!!! The message says I need to remove any new hard
drives!?!?!

What have I done wrong? XP Disk manager indicates all partitiions are
healthy, recognizes C: as a system partition and E: as a boot partition. I
can see the C&D drives fine from WinXP. I can copy the files. But I cannot
boot into Win2k.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try temporarily disconnecting the new drive to see if you can
successfully boot into Win2K?

I would try reinstalling XP, but instead of installing from Win2K,
boot from the XP installation CD and reformat the partition before
installing.

Yes... Even with the new drive disconnected, the same thing happens which
tells me that the win2k installation is corrupted somehow.

I will re-install XP if necessary but first I ahve to fix Win2k.
