Mulitple invites to same attendee

When using a distribution list as invite list for a meeting or a single
person on a reoccurring meeting, it will duplicate the invitees as they
respond. This is a huge problem when needing to update because it will send
to mulitple, not to mention it will not allow you to see their schedules plus
it will count each thereby giving an invalid number of accepted/declined
etc...
Is there a patch? or a way to avoid this?

If a person is on a DL, do not invite them separately.

They aren't invited separately, that's the problem. When they respond it
comes back separately therefore if the item is updated it sends a duplicate
invite, if I delete it the duplicate, it cancels the meeting altogether.
Apparently Outlook is not equipped to handle a DL in an invite.
